CRAFTING TIPS
-
WORK SURFACE: It is important to protect the work space you use for crafting. If you do not have a plastic or rubberized craft sheet, then you can use waxed paper.
-

GLUE: This is one of the major supplies that you will need. Most glues come with a tip applicator or brush attached to inside the cap so they are easy to apply. It is important to understand your project materials before deciding on a glue. For example, a paper-based project would benefit by using a specific glue such as paper cement or even a school glue in a tube but will not give any adhesive quality for other materials. For stronger needs with
wood, or metal or cloth, search for a glue that promotes a bond for that material.
-

COLOR: Color is important in all your projects and choosing the correct type is as important as choosing the glue. For paper, you can choose poster, acrylic or watercolor paints (for use with special paper) but for nonporous
surfaces like metal or plastic, its different. Check the label of the product for application suggestions however for stamping, Stazon is best for those surfaces. Also think creatively to color: I have used shoe polish to color
leather wristbands and food coloring on a bead resurfaced with clay.
-

CLAY: Use air dry clay such as Paper Clay which is soft and very malleable. Just remember to cover the unused portion tightly so it does not dry out. You can use the clay to create 2 and 3 dimensional projects and it can also be used to cover surfaces such as wood (beads, small picture frames) and then it can be embellished when dry.
-
SUPPORT SUPPLIES: I used Aleene’s Stiffen Quick to spray the leaf before I started embellishing because it provided strength. Also sprays that give a shine such as Krylon Acrylic Crystal-Clear Spray Gloss is terrific for a shiny finish to your project.
-
NATURE: Explore nature for elements to embellish. I provided a simple leaf decorated with a variety of elements and you can also discover beautiful flowers to press and use on a project such as a greeting card.
-

FOUND OBJECTS: There are many elements all around us that can be used as a project surface or embellishment. Try looking at things in different ways. I once found a deserted hubcap on the street and picked it up to use as a photo frame!

EXPLORE: Many interesting and innovative products are marketed in craft companies. For example, for stickers your choices include vinyl, pearls, crystals and more. For surfaces, sprays can be found which will stiffen, color, gloss, shine and protect.
